School Bag Donation from Dr. Nakalembe Catherine
Education and opportunity go hand in hand, and recently that connection was beautifully reinforced at Play of Hope thanks to the generosity of Dr. Nakalembe Catherine, a distinguished scientist and patron of our academy. Dr. Nakalembe, widely known for her work in advancing food security through science and technology, extended her support to the youth in our program by donating school bags to our players a gesture that spoke volumes about her belief in the power of education and community support.
Dr. Nakalembe’s own journey from Kampala to global impact shows her deep commitment to empowering the next generation. As an Associate Research Professor at the University of Maryland and Africa Program Director for NASA Harvest, she has used satellite remote sensing and innovative technologies to improve food security across Africa. She has been recognized with prestigious honors, including the Africa Food Prize and Uganda’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the country’s highest civilian award, for her contributions to science and society.
For the young people at Play of Hope, the school bag donation was more than material support— it was a reminder that their education matters, that their community sees their potential, and that leaders like Dr. Nakalembe believe in their journey. In a world where access to basic school supplies can influence a child’s confidence and attendance, the gift reinforced the message that every child deserves the tools to learn, grow, and succeed.
Play of Hope is deeply grateful for Dr. Nakalembe’s leadership and compassion. Her support reflects the heart of our mission: to nurture young people through sport, mentorship, and opportunity. By investing in both their athletic and academic paths, we continue to build environments where youth can thrive, unlock new possibilities, and pursue brighter futures on and off the court.
